Welcome to beautiful and historic Christ Church established in the mid-19th century on the ridge of Montefiore Hill overlooking the city of Adelaide. The determination of the pioneering church-going residents of North Adelaide to hold services in their own place of worship led the women of the district to start a building fund in 1841, but it was not until the arrival of the first bishop, Dr Augustus Short, in 1848 that construction work was started.

What you see today are many of the original features of the first building with extensions and embellishments added throughout the years.

This website details some of the interesting items and events of our history. Christ Church operates under its own Trust Deed, which gives it additional strength and a measure of autonomy in the running of its parish life. For many years it was used by Bishop Short as the pro-Cathedral pending the opening in 1877 of St Peter's Cathedral.

The original Bishop's Chair is one of our treasures which you will see in the Sanctuary!

Most of the services of public worship in the church are taken from the Book of Common Prayer and many of our congregation come considerable distances to enjoy the reverent dignity of the 16th century words and the splendour of the music with which we augment them. The shining thread of continuity in our worship is a source of strength and comfort to regular attenders and a valued option for all Anglicans.

Please take your time to absorb the timeless peace of Christ Church where worshippers have sought spiritual strength for over 150 years. Today's congregation is strong in its commitment to the living faith and will ensure that the life of our church is relevant to the present time and adaptable to the needs of future generations of Christian worshippers.

The church is among the few open daily, enabling residents and visitors to spend time in quietness and prayer. You are invited to join us in Sunday worship, or to visit the church during the week: you will be very welcome.

Rector - The Reverend Lyndon Sulzberger
